Chicago is Our Campus

For “Why – and What – Should We Read?” the class takes trips to Chicago institutions, including libraries and art galleries, in connection with course topics. Here are some videos of our trips in the fall of 2013.

John Brady, Manager of the Collections at the Newberry Library, shows us a “girdle binding” from the 15th century. He also shows us a replica conservators made to study the original binding.

On the occasion of a visit to the Joan Flasch Artists Book Collection of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I interview Trevor Griffith about what makes a “book.”
